(Neb)-Eagles Host Cowgirls In Softball Home Opener
CHADRON - The Chadron State softball team has its home opener today as the Eagle host New Mexico Highlands in the first of 2 days of RMAC doubleheaders.
The games were moved from tomorrow and Sunday to today and tomorrow because of forecasts for cold weather on Sunday. First pitch is noon today and 11:00 tomorrow.
The Eagles are 2-12 and the Cowgirls 2-9 after both were swept in their RMAC opening weekends last week...CSC by 3rd-ranked Colorado Mesa and Highlands by 17th-ranked Colorado Christian.
Despite their win-loss record, the Chadron State pitchers are having an excellent season with a combined ERA of 3.49 and an opponents batting average of .226. The team's problems are with the other two aspects of the game - hitting and fielding.
The Eagles have been shutout 5 times and held to 1 run in 3 other games as they're hitting just .216 and have scored only 40 runs...16 of which came in their opening victory.
Defensively they've committed 29 errors in 14 games compared to 15 miscues by their opponents, and 44 of the 76 runs CSC has given up were unearned while just 8 of the 40 runs they've scored were unearned.
New Mexico Highlands is hitting .322 as a team and averaging over 9 runs per game, but over half their runs and 35% of their hits came in their two victories...both against Western New Mexico. The Cowgirls hit .276 and scored 23 runs in their 9 losses
They're also struggling in the field with 20 errors leading to a third of the 104 runs they've give up being unearned...while their pitchers have an ERA of 8.23 on top of the unearned runs.
