(Neb)-CSC's Thumm 2nd, Taylor 6th At NCAA Wrestling Regional
LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Chadron State College redshirt junior Brock Thumm finished 2nd at 141 pounds at the NCAA Division II West Super Regional wrestling tournament Saturday, earning a berth at the national tournament in two weeks. The Eagles also picked up a 6th from heavyweight Rulon Taylor.
Thumm, from Watervliet, Michigan, lost in the finals 8-4 to Andrew Schulte of California Baptist University in a match up of the 5th and 6th seeds.
Thumm had clinched a spot at nationals on Friday when he upset 3rd-ranked Brandon Ball of Fort Hays State University 2-1 in the semifinals after beating RMAC champion Austin Solan 3-2 in overtime in the quarterfinals.
Taylor had lost in the quarterfinals and needed to win in both the consolation semifinals and the 3rd-place match Saturday morning, but lost to Cody Johnson of Colorado State-Pueblo 10-3 in the semifinals and 6-3 to Zach Schrader of California Baptist in the 5th-place match.
Chadron State has now qualified at least one wrestler for either the NAIA or NCAA Division II wrestling national tournament for 50 straight years.
