(Neb.)-Thumm, Taylor Advance To Second Day Of Regional

By: Dennis Brown Posted at: 02/24/2018 01:39 PM
LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- February 23, 2018 -- Despite entering the NCAA West Super Regional undermanned, unranked, and under pressure, the Chadron State College wrestling team on Friday sent two of its six healthy wrestlers into the second day of competition, when placements will be decided.

Redshirt junior Brock Thumm, of Watervliet, Michigan, advanced to the quarterfinals on a forfeit, and faced the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion, fourth-seeded Austin Solari of San Francisco State University, in the second round. He defeated Solari 3-2 in the second tiebreaker period, escaping in eight seconds in the first before riding his opponent for 30 seconds straight, then moved on to the semifinal matchup. Thumm, the fifth seed in the tournament, then upset the No. 3 wrestler in the nation, top-seeded Brandon Ball of Fort Hays State University, in a 2-1 three-period decision. Ball was the regional champion in 2017, and went on to place sixth at nationals.

Thumm will face the sixth seed in the region, Andrew Schulte of California Baptist University, in tomorrow's finals which begin at noon. He is assured of either first or second place, either of which is good enough to qualify him for the NCAA Division II Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in two weeks. His participation would mark the 50th consecutive season a Chadron State wrestler has made the national tournament.

In the heavyweight bracket, Rulon Taylor of Curtis, Nebraska, went 3-1 on Friday for a bid in the consolation semifinal. He was dominant in an 8-4 win over Ouchita Baptist University's Tanner Hawkins to open the first round, and dropped his quarterfinal match to region favorite Caleb Cotter, the No. 4-ranked heavyweight in Division II. Taylor returned to dominant form in the consolations, pinning Western State Colorado University's Sam DeSeriere in the third period, before upsetting fourth-seeded No. 10 Sam Alnassiri to dispatch him from the tourney with an 8-7 decision.

Taylor can assure himself of qualifying for nationals with two wins on Saturday, which would place him on the podium with bronze. He faces No. 9 Cody Johnson of Colorado State University-Pueblo in the round beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. A fourth-place qualifying spot is also available depending on tomorrow's outcomes.

Chase Clasen went 1-2 at 149 pounds, knocking off Diego Calderon of Western State for the third time this season. He and the other three CSC wrestlers each lost to at least one opponent who are currently nationally ranked, or had been at some point in the past year.

Chadron State is in 12th place in the team standings, with 24.0 points. The leader after one day is California Baptist, with 94.5.
