By: Dennis Brown Posted at: 01/28/2018 07:38 AM
LAS VEGAS, N.M.— January 27, 2018 -- The Chadron State College women's basketball team broke its 13-game losing streak by clipping New Mexico Highlands University 66-57 on Saturday night in Las Vegas, N.M.

Although the Eagles had dropped games by one, two and three points, all at home in January, they had not won since Dec. 2, but capitalized on a strong third quarter to get past the Cowgirls.

The score was knotted 26-26 at halftime, but Chadron State outscored the hosts 27-17 in the third to take control.  The Eagles clinched the victory by scoring seven of the game's final nine points.

Chadron State coach Janet Raymer commended her players for exhibiting lots of toughness and taking good care of the ball. The Eagles had a season-low 10 turnovers, nine fewer than their season average.

Freshman Jessica Harvey led the Chadron State in both scoring and rebounding with 15 points, including a trio of three-pointers, and eight rebounds.

The Eagles also got outstanding performances from several players off the bench.  Among them was senior Letty Rodriguez, who finished with a season-high 14 points, including seven in the fateful third period.

Another was freshman Bailey Brooks, who had scored just 13 points entering the game, but tallied 10 points, including six in the final 2:10 in the second period to tie the score at halftime.

Team leader Kalli Feddersen also finished with 10 points, all from the free throw line; nine of them in the second half.

For Highlands, 5-10 sophomore Ari Baca poured in more than half of her team's points. She finished with 32 while making nine of 15 field goal attempts and 14 of 17 free throws.  No one else scored more than seven for the Cowgirls.

The Eagles were 19 of 53 (35.8 percent) from the field while the Cowgirls were 17 of 62 (27.4). Another edge was at the free throw line where CSC was 22 of 28 and Highlands 18 of 30.

Both teams are now 2-12 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Overall, CSC is 4-16 and Highlands 4-15.

The Eagles will play at Colorado Christian and Colorado Mines in the Denver metroplex this coming weekend.
