(Neb.)-Lady Cardinals earn comeback win in Sturgis

By: Andrew Lacy Posted at: 02/16/2014 12:09 AM
The Chadron girls basketball team erased a 17 point deficit in the second half Saturday to beat Sturgis Brown 62-58. The boys fell 55-35.

The Lady Cardinals got off to a slow start in their game, falling behind 31-22 at halftime. Sturgis extended the margin to as much as 17 before Chadron began chipping away at the difference. After being down 50-39 following the third quarter, Chadron outscored Sturgis 23-8 in the final period to surge back.

After trailing most of the game, Chadron tied it at 56 with 2:11 left to play. Sturgis got a basket to go up 58-56, but freshman Jadyn McCartney scored the final four points of the game to seal the improbable come from behind victory. She finished the game with 13 points and 8 rebounds, including five for five at the free throw line.

Chandler Hageman led Chadron with 17 points and 8 rebounds and Peyton Hinn scored 12 to move into second place on the school's career scoring list behind Ashlea Kerr.

The Chadron boys shot the ball poorly all night and never led in their loss. Sturgis jumped out to a ten point lead behind four three pointers from Tanner Weaver, who finished with 26 points.

The deficit stayed around 10 for most of the first half, but Sturgis pulled away in the third quarter when a technical foul on TD Stein followed by a series of turnovers let the home team quickly extend the lead to 20. Chadron was never able to threaten again the rest of the night.

Spencer Eliason was the only Cardinal in double figures, finishing with 11 points and 8 rebounds while playing very limited time in the second half because of foul trouble.

The girls will open up subdistrict play Tuesday night in Alliance against Gordon-Rushville. The boys have one last regular season game Thursday at home against Red Cloud.
