(Neb.)-Chadron Gridders Spoil Gordon-Rushville's Homecoming

By: John Kant Posted at: 09/21/2012 09:49 PM

(Gordon, NE)-The Chadron High football team traveled to Gordon Friday night to play the spoiler role during the Mustang's Homecoming festivities, but early on it was nothing short of an old-fashioned Chadron-Gordon/Rushville rivalry.

The Mustangs drew first blood with 6:07 to go in the first period on a Tristan Tuma 2 yard run.  Sandoz booted the extra-point kick for the 7-0 lead.  Chadron responded quickly as Chance Bila had an impressive return on the insuing kickoff to set himself up nicely for a 3 yard scamper to the endzone several plays later just 1:43 after Gordon-Rushville found paydirt.  The point after kick was no good, so The Mustangs held onto a slim 7-6 lead.

After both teams traded interceptions in a scoreless second stanza, that 7-6 edge for Gordon-Rushville carried into the locker room at halftime.

Whatever Chadron Head Coach Mike Letcher told his team at intermission was evidentally inspiring, as the Cardinals came out in the second half to score 28 unanswered points to claim that spoiler title.

It took only 2:40 for Chadron to cross the end zone on a Jackson Dickerson 6 yard jaunt.  T.D. Stein took it in himself for the two point conversion to put the Cardinals up 14-7.  Less than six minutes later, Stein connected with Spencer Eliason on a 9 yard toss, and Matt Lordino added the extra point kick to give Chadron a 21-7 lead with 3:30 left in the third.

In the 4th quarter, it was Lordino who came up with an interception before it became the Calen Johnson show as he found paydirt on runs of 37 and 25 yards respectively.  Lordino hit on 1 of 2 extra point boots to close out the scoring and make the final score Chadron 34  Gordon-Rushville  7.

Calen Johnson finished the night with 12 rushes for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns, which garnered him Taco John's Player Of The Game honors.

Next up for the Cardinals is Ogallala on the road next Friday.
