(Neb)-Morrill County VSO Pleads Guilty To Embezzlement
BRIDGEPORT, Neb. (AP) - Former Morrill County Veterans Service Officer Devin Heumesser has pleaded guilty embezzling more than $18,000 during his 13-month tenure in the position.
The 32-year-old Heumesser was initially charged with Felony Theft by Unlawful Taking (More Than $5,000), but this week in Morrill County District Court pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal to 4 counts of misdemeanor Theft by Unlawful Taking ($501 to $1,499).
Heumesser has already paid full restitution of nearly $18,400 and faces up to a total of 4 years in prison when he's sentenced April 1st.
Court documents show complaints about his work hours led to a disciplinary hearing being scheduled last February, but that Heumesser quit before it was held. His interim successor noticed suspicious payments from the office account and law enforcement was contacted.
The investigation showed that Heumesser made nearly 50 transactions of $100 to $1,500 dollars - supposedly to help local veterans - but when contacted the listed veterans said they'd never received any money.
Investigators also found at least 18 checks that were either made out directly to Heumesser or had no documentation on who the check was for. A warrant for his arrest was issued in May, and Heumesser was arrested in July.
