(SD)-Salvage Logging Underway At Custer State Park
CUSTER, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks says one of its largest timber salvage operations is underway at Custer State Park in the wake of the Legion Lake Fire, which burned across much of the park, part of Wind Cave National Park, and private land last month to char some 85-square miles.
Custer State Park Resource Manager Mark Hendrix tells the Rapid City Journal that some 15 contractors will log nearly 6,200 acres of burned Ponderosa pines over the next 6 to 12 weeks.
Hendrix says the park will be dealing with the aftermath of the fire for the next 5-to-10 years with logging the immediate focus and erosion control and weed spraying the longest operations.
Forester Amanda Morrison says logging to remove destroyed and badly damaged timber improves safety for visitors and aids the forest floor.
