(SD)-SD House Passes Lawmaker Pay Amendment
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -The South Dakota House has approved a constitutional amendment tieing lawmaker pay to income in the state. The 38-26 vote sends the measure to the state Senate, where approval would put it on the November ballot for the public will make the final decision.
South Dakota state lawmakers currently make $6,000 per session plus a per diem allowance, but the proposed amendment would set salaries at 1/5th of the state's median household income or more than $10,000 this year. Supporters say low pay limits the pool of potential legislators.
