(Neb)-NU Responds To Brewer-Erdman Letter
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - University of Nebraska officials have fired back at 3 state senators, two from the Panhandle, who publicly questioned the school's treatment of conservative students.
Senators Tom Brewer of Gordon, Steve Erdman of Bayard, and Steve Halloran of Hastings wrote a joint letter to the editor of two Nebraska papers questioning whether the university and UNL in particular present a hostile environment for conservative students.
The senators, all in their first year in office, pointed to an incident earlier this year in which a graduate student-lecturer allegedly called an undergraduate recruiting for a conservative group a "neo-fascist." They questioned whether the university could fairly investigate the incident.
University President Hank Bounds and UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green wrote letters in response, with Bounds questioning the senators' intent and Green saying the university won't "be politicized" and used a pawn.
