By: Jeremy Anderson Posted at: 01/25/2013 02:02 PM

(Chadron)-On January 24, 2013, Chadron police officers arrested one suspect in connection with the 30 plus thefts from motor vehicles and a stolen motor vehicle that occurred the night of January 22, 2013 and are currently looking for a second suspect who is believed to be involved.
Caleb Scherbarth (age 18) was arrested for the offenses of Theft by Unlawful Taking (a class III Felony), Theft by Receiving Stolen Property (a Class III Felony), and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (a Class I Misdemeanor). Scherbarth was taken to the Dawes County Jail and bond was set at 10% of $50,000.00.
The Chadron Police Department’s investigation into the thefts benefited through receiving tip information from witnesses in the community. This tip information was followed up on and officers were able to obtain a search warrant for Scherbarth’s residence located at 129 Maple Street, Chadron. The search warrant was served, with the assistance of the Nebraska State Patrol on the Scherbarth residence around 5:00P.M. Thursday night. As a result of the search warrant items missing from some of the thefts from motor vehicles were located along with small amounts of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and illegal fireworks.
At the time the search warrant was served, there were two other residents at the Maple Street address; Shannon Barron (age 36) received a citation for disorderly house and George Barron (age 38) received citations for disorderly house, possession of marijuana less than one ounce, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of illegal fireworks. Lieutenant Rick Hickstein says “It is very worthwhile when citizens come forward and provide tip information to law enforcement, which leads to the recovery of stolen property and the arrest of the perpetrators of these crimes. By working together with our community, we can make Chadron safer. The investigation into the thefts is continuing and the Chadron Police Department currently has a second suspect, which we are actively looking for in connection with the multiple thefts from motor vehicles the night of January 22, 2013.”
Lieutenant Hickstein says; “if you believe you have information that my help the Chadron Police Department solve this crime or any other crime, we ask that you contact the Chadron Police Department at 308-432-0510 or you can report this information to the Dawes County Crime Stoppers hotline at 308-432-0519. Making a report to Crime Stoppers, you will remain entirely anonymous and you may be eligible for a reward up to $1000.00.”
The Chadron Police Department was assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol, the Pine Ridge Police Department, and the Dawes County Attorney’s Office.
