03/12/2018 - Asa Lee ‘Bud’ Hicks

Funeral services for Asa Lee ‘Bud’ Hicks, age 91, of Martin, SD will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 12, 2018 at the American Legion in Martin, SD.
Burial with Military Honors will be held in the Martin Community Cemetery in Martin, SD.
 
Visitation will be from 3:00-5:00 PM on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Bennett County Funeral Home in Martin, SD.
 
A memorial has been established for Bennett County Home Health, and donations may be sent in care of Bennett County Funeral Service, PO Box 65, Martin, SD 57551.

Bud passed away on March 6, 2018 at the Bennett County Hospital in Martin, SD.
 
Bud was born on June 29, 1926 to Asa and Julia Steele Hicks in a sod house northeast of Martin, SD. As a young boy, he lived in the Patricia area as his parents operated the store and farmed. When his parents sold the Patricia store, they moved to Martin where they purchased a creamery. They eventually purchased the home place where Bud lived until his death. During his youth, he participated in 4-H and was involved with the family horse business providing bucking horses for area rodeos. He attended schools in Bennett County and graduated from high school in 1945. He enlisted in the Army in 1950 and served on the front line combat zone during the Korean War. Bud served as a past Post #240 Commander, was Post Legionnaire of the Year in 1970, and District Legionnaire of the Year in 1972. He also served on the ASCS board and the school board. He enjoyed watching sports, rodeos, and western movies.
He married Lynna Cummings on July 19, 1957 in Rapid City, SD. To this union, three children were born, Lee, Leona, and Lyle. They lived on the home place farming and ranching their entire marriage. Lynna passed away on February 4, 2000.
Survivors include children Lee of Martin, SD, Leona (Hal) Oberlander of New Underwood, SD, and Lyle (Doreen) of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren Shawna (Ben) Hauser of Casper, WY, Jeremy Hicks of Martin, SD, Mandi Hicks of Sheridan, WY, Melissa (Josh) Wiese of Oconto, NE, Tyler Oberlander of  Hershey, NE, Keil Oberlander of Kapolei, HI, Aaron (Megan Iverson) Oberlander of Sturgis, SD, Justin Oberlander of New Underwood, SD, and Sierra Oberlander of New Underwood, SD; great-grandchildren Meleah, Colton, Tatam, Lynae, Cheyenne, Asa Bella, Aiden, and Victor; sister-in-laws Doris Hicks, Luella Hicks, and Elsie Bostock; brother-in-law Dane Cummings; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bud was preceded in death by parents Asa and Julia; wife Lynna; grandson Justin; brothers John, Nathan, Dale, Neil, Leonard, and Melvin; sisters Edith, Amber, and Ethel; sister-in-laws Connie Hicks, Janet Belle Hicks, and Margaret Frost; brother-in-laws Quincy Louden, Clarence Cummings, and Melvin Cummings; mother-in-law Mary Belle Wallace; and father-in-law Frank Cummings.
Bennett County Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements for Bud Hicks.
