02/23/2018 - Barbara (Montague) Stewart

Funeral services for Barbara A. (Montague) Stewart, age 90, of Chadron, NE will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 23, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chadron, NE with Father Todd Philipsen officiating.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
A vigil will be at 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chadron.

Barbara passed away on February 16, 2018 at the Hemingford Community Care Center in Hemingford, NE after a short bout with cancer. She was born on November 23, 1927 to Rose and James Montague at the family home west of Dunlap, NE along the Niobrara River. Barbara attended grade school at Dunlap and high school at St. Agnes Academy in Alliance, NE and Assumption Academy in Chadron, NE. After high school, Barbara worked at the bank in Hay Springs, NE and later on at the J.C. Penney store in Alliance.
On June 1, 1948, she married Bill Stewart, the love of her life, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Hemingford. The couple lived for a short while in Alliance before moving to Chadron. Chadron was Barbara’s home for over 65 years. In Chadron, Barbara and Bill raised eight children. In the early days, while keeping the house in order and the kids in line, Barbara also waited on customers who came to the greenhouses for flowers and other plants at the east edge of Chadron. For several years, Barbara worked at the Chadron Medical Clinic and hospital as well. Barbara was a loving wife and mother and a wonderful cook. In 2016, for health reasons, Barbara and Bill moved into the Hemingford Community Care Center.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, brother James, sister Rosemary, son Stephen, and daughter Alesia. 
Barbara is survived by loving husband Bill of 69 years; sons Billy and wife Linda of Bigfork, MT, John and wife Jolie of Chadron, NE, and Tony of Great Falls MT; daughters Mary Schnell (Steve Wolters) of Blackhawk, SD, Bernadette Marquardt and husband Steve of Cedaredge, CO, and Bridget Burkhart and husband Tony of Scottsbluff, NE; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara was a devout Catholic and member of St. Patrick’s Parish in Chadron for over 65 years. She never wavered in her faith and trust in her Savior, Jesus Christ.
Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements for Barbara A. (Montague) Stewart.
