Funeral services for Joseph Larry Chief Bear III “Tasunke Luta,” age 56, will be at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at the LaCreek CAP Office in Martin, SD with Father Ron Seminara officiating.
Burial will be at a later date. Cremation will follow the funeral service.
A visitation service will be from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at the LaCreek CAP Office in Martin, SD.
Joseph III was a veteran in the U.S. Army.
Joseph III was born on May 28, 1961 in Kadoka, SD to Joe Chief Bear II and Mercy High Pipe. He made his journey to the Spirit World on December 25, 2017 in Philip, SD.
Joseph was raised in Hisle, SD on the family’s land by his Unci, Vina Chief Bear, before attending the Army and completing his degree in Environmental Science. He shares his Lakota name, Tasunke Luta (Red Horse), with his father and grandfather.
A special thanks to the Philip Nursing Home Staff, who cared for him in his last days, and also to the Philip Livestock Auction and Martin Sale Barn where he worked.
Joseph is survived by son Joseph Chief Bear IV of Wanblee, SD; significant other Beverly Red Willow of Hisle, SD; and brother William George Chief Bear of Hisle, SD.
Joseph was preceded in death by parents Joseph Chief Bear II and Mercy High Pipe; maternal grandparents David High Pipe and Susie Fox; paternal grandparents Joseph Chief Bear II and Minnie Charging Crow; beloved grandmother (great aunt) Vina Chief Bear; sister Susie Chief Bear; and brothers John Whipple and Roger LaPointe.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Joseph Larry Chief Bear III.
