10/27/2017 - Howard H. Olson

A one-night wake service for Howard H. Olson, age 77, will be held at the Porcupine School Gymnasium in Porcupine, SD on Friday, October 27, 2017 starting at 6:00 PM and running until midnight. Evening services start at 7:00 PM at the Porcupine School Gym in Porcupine, SD.
Howard passed away on October 22, 2017 in Rapid City, SD.
Howard was born to Zona and Harold Olson in Omaha, NE on December 15, 1939. He was raised and educated in the Omaha, NE school system. He graduated from North High in Omaha, NE. Howard had one sibling, his younger brother William (Bill), who preceded him in death.
In 1993, Howard came back to his homeland, Red Shirt/Cuny Table area of the Pine Ridge Sioux Indian reservation. In 2005, he moved to the “ranch” at Porcupine, SD, as the caretaker of his khola Russell Means and Pearl Means' home and ranch in 2005.
For 12 years, Howard made his home at the ranch in Porcupine and through this friendship, he became a member of a large extended family that loved him and appreciated him.
Howard unexpectedly began his journey to the stars and to the camps of our People in the Spirit World on October 22, 2017 on the same day, five years after his khola Russell Means began his journey. Those who knew how close their bond and friendship was, take comfort in this reunion.
Howard was known for the generosity of his spirit, for his astute business mind, and his willingness to help those around him and those he loved.
He was generous, kind and had a loving heart toward people and especially the children he was around – who lovingly called him “lala” or “kaka” or grandpa. He made all those around him feel loved and special.
He made the world we live in a better place with his laughter, smile and generosity. He lifted up Lakota and Dakota artists and valued the art they created and shared it with the world.
Howard is survived by Gabrial, Christian, their children and his large circle of loved ones. He will be sorely missed by all who value and love him. We are grateful for the time Creator gave us with him.
Journey well and rest well, lala Howard; we love you.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Howard H. Olson.
