Funeral services for Tyler Shane DuBray “Wakinyan Hohpeca” (Handsome Lightning), age 26, will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at the American Horse School in Allen, SD. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Steven DuBray Sr., Steven DuBray Jr., Santee Witt and John “Keya” Attack Him.
Burial will be at the Inestimable Gift Cemetery in Allen, SD.
A two-night wake service will begin with the first night starting at 4:00 PM on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at the Steven (Lolita) DuBray residence north of Allen, SD. The second night will start at 7:00 AM on Friday, September 1, 2017 at the American Horse School in Allen, SD.
Tyler passed away on August 26, 2017 in Allen, SD. He was born on December 31, 1990 in Pine Ridge, SD to Tom DuBray & Jennifer Crazy Bear at the old Pine Ridge Hospital.
Tyler lived in Allen, SD all his life; he was very proud that he came from the North Corn Creek Buffalo Corrals. He was a student at American Horse School and graduated middle school from Little Wound School. He attended and graduated from Little Wound High School in 2011. Tyler was a current student at Pass Creek College Center. He was known by many names by many different people as well as his own names he created. Tyler had many, many special family members who raised him from a baby and throughout his life. His joy in life was playing hand games, singing, beading, dancing Fancy bustle, practicing his beautiful Lakota language and spirituality. His love of coffee, beadwork, powwows and hand game tournaments will be remembered by many. Tyler was very loved by the Oyate, and he loved the Oyate very much just as they loved him.
Survivors include parents Thomas DuBray and Jennifer Crazy Bear of Allen, SD; brothers Eternity and Rocky DuBray of Allen, SD; hunka parents Ted and Alice Phelps of Thunder Valley, SD; special nephew and nieces Memphis, Tiarra and Paris DuBray of Calico, SD; aunts Isabelle (Garland) Gaddie, Felice and Carmel DuBray, all of Allen, SD, Sally (Aaron) DeSersa of Manderson, SD, and Pam (Jim) Attack Him of Allen, SD; uncles Steven Sr., (Lolita) DuBray, Luke and Gary DuBray of Allen, SD, Andy (Rose) Johnson of Pine Ridge, SD, Fred Byerley of Porcupine, SD, and Douglas Johnson Jr. of Chicago, Ill; grandmothers Marcella Iron Cloud-DuBray of Kyle, SD and Eugina Arguello-DuBray of Denver, CO; cousins Waylon (Helen) Gaddie, Mahpiya Not Afraid, Julius Not Afraid, Santee (Dottie) Witt, Bobby DuBray, April DuBray, Autumn DuBray, Marriah Not Afraid, Chance DuBray, Tamarra (Jason) DuBray, Adam DuBray, Aaron DuBray, Steven (Alyssa) DuBray Jr., Lily Vaughn DuBray, John “Keya” (Marriah) Attack Him, Cordell Attack Him and Chant Cross, Annie Pilcher, Heather Pourier, Jessie and Jennifer Byerley, Kimberly Janis, Garrett Rain Grey, and Amber, Shelby, Sasha, Sunni Rae and Andrew Johnson Jr.
Tyler was preceded in death by grandparents James and Florine DuBray, Inez Crazy Bear-Johnson, Amelia Comes Last, Winnie and Albert Crazy Bear, Arlene Hepner, Grace Jump, Raymond Yellow Thunder, and Russell Yellow Thunder and special sunka’s Precious “P. Jones” and Melissa.
