06/20/2017 - Charles Long Soldier Sr.

Funeral services for Charles Anthony Long Soldier Sr., age 67, will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the Little Wound School Gym in Kyle, SD with Reverend Robert Two Bulls officiating. Traditional services will be provided by Richard Moves Camp.
Burial will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the Lakota Freedom Veterans Cemetery in Kyle, SD.
A one-night wake service will begin at 3:00 PM on Monday, June 19, 2017 at the Little Wound School Gym in Kyle, SD.
Charles was a veteran in the U.S. Army. He was born on November 19, 1949 in Pine Ridge, SD to Francis and Evelyn (Janis) Long Soldier. He made his journey to the Spirit World on June 14, 2017 at the Bennett County Hospital in Martin, SD.
Charles attended grade school and graduated from the 8th grade from the Crazy Horse School in Wanblee, SD. He entered the United States Army on November 15, 1968 in Fort Lewis, WA when he was 19 years old and was honorably discharged on March 16, 1970, serving a total of one year and three months with 9 months of Foreign Service. Charles was stationed in Fort Lewis, WA, Fort Sill, OK, and also in South Korea during the Vietnam War. 
Upon his return from the Army, Charles attended college at the School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, SD, Black Hills State in Spearfish, SD and Oglala Lakota College in Kyle, SD. After college, Charles was an EMT for many years, BIA Wild Land Fire Fighter, a volunteer D.J. at KILI Radio, Commander of Post 269 in Wanblee, SD and a Media Coordinator at Oglala Lakota College. Charles volunteered for many different things throughout the area, he was an activist for many people whose voices were not heard, and also an activist for human and civil rights. Charles’ working career ended soon due to an automobile accident that forced him to stop working. Charles will be missed by all who knew him and by the many people he stood up for. 
Charles is survived by spouse Eileen Two Bulls of Kyle, SD; sons Tim (Tashina) Long Soldier of Kyle, SD, Charles Jr. (Xaviera) Long Soldier of Oglala, SD, Antoine Long Soldier of Manderson, SD, Travis Barden-Richards of Pine Ridge, SD, Donald (Shara Byrnes) Long Soldier of Kyle, SD, and Kurti Paul Bear Stops of Wanblee, SD; daughters Emily (Ted Little Whiteman) Long Soldier of Kyle, SD; Kimberly Long Soldier of Morganton, NC, Lahnee Long Soldier of Oglala, SD, Bobbi Long Soldier of Manderson, SD, and Adrienne (Cole) Long Soldier-McAdoo of Bismarck, ND; brother Alvin Long Soldier of Buena Vista, CO; sisters Colleen Bettelyoun of Wanblee, SD, Anna (Jerry) Brings Him Back of Pine Ridge, SD, Delphine One Horn of Kyle, SD, Eileen (Robert) Running Bear of Pine Ridge, SD, Delores Janis and Sharon (Elton) Yellow Boy of Rapid City, SD, and Cheryl Whistler of Pine Ridge, SD; maternal aunt Mabel Janis of Kyle, SD; paternal aunt and uncle Jim and Francine Red Willow; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Charles was preceded in death by parents Francis and Evelyn (Janis) Long Soldier; children Cheryl Long Soldier, Carla Long Soldier, and Brett Long Soldier; brother Frank Long Soldier; aunt Margaret Thorson; grandparents Antoine and Elizabeth (Randall) Long Soldier and Wilson and Alice Janis; and friends Gloria Gail DeSersa-Bradshaw and Lorna Rose Four Dance.
