05/13/2017 - Jane (Ruffing) Gorton Hickok

Memorial services for Jane Alice (Ruffing) Gorton Hickok, age 77, of College Place, WA, will be at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Crawford Seventh-day Adventist Church in Crawford, NE with Pastor Mark Magnusson officiating.
Inurnment will take place at the Crawford Cemetery beside her first husband, Robert Gorton.
Memorial services were also held for Jane on Thursday, April 20, 2017 in the Heubach Chapel of the Walla Walla University Church in College Place, WA with Pastor Mike Lambert officiating.
A memorial has been established, and donations may be made to Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home in Crawford, to Gospel Outreach, P.O. Box 8, College Place, WA 99324, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Jane passed away on December 17, 2016, quietly in her sleep after a brief cardiac illness.
Jane was born on December 28, 1938 in Crawford, NE, the second child of John J. Ruffing Sr. and Jennie R. (Wilton) Ruffing. She spent her early years on the Ruffing Ranch in northern Sioux County, NE and secured her elementary education at School District #9. She graduated in the class of 1956 from Platte Valley Academy in Shelton, NE and graduated in the class of 1960 from Union College in Lincoln, NE with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing. Following graduation, Jane was employed by Porter Memorial Hospital in Denver, CO. She left her position there in the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit to care for her aging parents back on the ranch in Nebraska.
On March 28, 1963, Jane married Robert Gorton in Denver, CO, and became the stepmother to John and Barbara Gorton. Following the deaths of her parents and her first husband, Robert, she continued to work as a nurse at the Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home in Crawford. She joined a travel club with her local bank and enjoyed bus trips to scenic places in the United States and cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal. She enjoyed photography and playing the piano. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and the Church in Crawford was her home church.
Jane was very dedicated to her profession of nursing and caregiving.
On July 9, 2000, Jane married Gaylen Hickok in the Crawford Adventist Church. They then moved to Tacoma, WA, where she continued geriatric nursing at the University Place Care Center. Upon retirement, they moved to the Walla Walla Valley in May 2004. She was active in Veterans Affairs with her husband, Gaylen, and assisted in community projects including Friends of the Walla Walla Symphony. Jane and Gaylen also enjoyed trips by car and train to visit friends and relatives.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Robert Gorton; and second husband Gaylen Hickok. She is survived by older brother John (Patricia) and family of Hemingford; younger brother James (Sharon) of North Platte; and stepchildren John Gorton and family of Rifle, CO and John and Barbara (Gorton) Allen and family of Oroville, CA.
