Zolita Esther Carpenter was born to Charley B. and Esther Morris Nov. 30 1925 in Edgemont, S.D.
She attended school at 4 corners, a small consolidated school near Spencer, Wyo. her father was the school bus driver.
The family moved to Chadron in 1934. Her father drove tanker truck for the refinery and after let the children ride with him to Lance Creek, Wyo. and back.
Zolita attended West Ward School through grade 6 then went to East Ward School in Grade 7; and High school grades 9-12.
She was very active in school. She played saxophone in the school band and traded her saxophone for a baton, much to her mother’s displeasure, because the Pep Club twirling uniforms were cuter. She participated in school plays and carnivals.
Her mother started a beauty salon in June 1940 and her father died suddenly of a heart attach in July.
Zolita was at once the older sister of three fatherless children and a mother with a business burden, so she really became a surrogate mother to brother these years younger and a 9 year old sister. The created a very strong family bond that exists yet today.
Zolita graduated in May 1943 and received her cosmetology license in June 1943, the youngest licensed operator in Nebraska at the time.
She married Dean Carpenter Sept. 14, 1944.
