10/23/2012 - Fire & Drought Workshop for Local Area Producers

UNL Extension and the USDA’s Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service are hosting a workshop for local producers with management information focusing on the drought and fire that impacted the area this summer.  UNL Extension and USDA agencies will make presentations throughout the day along with the NE Forest Service, a tax consultant and a representative from the Dawes-Sioux-Sheridan Fire Fund.
The USDA will offer insight into assistance opportunities available through the NRCS or the FSA.  The FSA will also discuss loan programs for producers.  UNL Extension will address winter feeding options and costs, and, rangeland management strategies to promote recovery from fire and drought.  A tax consultant will explore tax concerns tied to management choices made to address the lack of forage.  The Dawes-Sioux-Sheridan Fire Fund will discuss the Fund’s ability to assist ranchers impacted by fires.  And the NE Forest Service will address forestry management options to mitigate the impact of the fires and drought.  Individuals form the Nebraska Game and Parks, Upper Niobrara White NRD and USFS are expected to be in attendance and join in the conversations.  Don’t miss this opportunity to visit with friends, neighbors and information partners to best develop a management strategy for your situation.
The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23rd at the Fire Hall in Hay Springs.  Registration is from 9:00-9:30 AM, with the first session starting at 9:30 AM.  The day will end with a wrap-up – question and answer session from 3:00- 3:30 PM.  Participants are encouraged to call the Extension Office in Sheridan County by Friday October 19th to pre-register.  There is no charge for the workshop and lunch will be provided by local financial institutions and farm stores.
