(Neb.)- Brackets Announced For 2018 NCAA Wrestling
INDIANAPOLIS -- Chadron State College wrestler Brock Thumm learned Monday who his competition would be at the March 9-10 NCAA Division II Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as the tournament brackets were released.
His first-round opponent in the 141-pound bracket is Isaiah Royal, of Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina. Royal is officially 22-13 on the season, having finished third in the NCAA Midwest regional.
His sole loss in the Midwest regional was to No. 5 Nick Crume in the semifinal, and he scored a 46-second fall in his first consolation match.
Royal's Wolves dualled with both Colorado Mesa and Western State in January, but he has neither of his opponents in those duals in common with Thumm. The only common opponent between the two is Rio Zamora of Central Oklahoma. Royal tech falled Zamora in their seventh place match at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis in December, while Thumm took a 5-3 decision from him in November at the UNK Holiday Inn Open, in consolations.
The top seed in Thumm's quadrant will be No. 9 Drew Walker (22-7) of Notre Dame of Ohio, the champ in the East Regional.
Thumm is listed officially at 20-8 on the year. He has wins over Division II No. 3-ranked Brandon Ball of Fort Hays State, and NAIA No. 20 Albert Landeros of Hastings College.
