(S.D.)-Rapid City Native To Be First Paid NBA Assistant Coach Listen
(Regional)- The NBA is welcoming a woman! The San Antonio Spurs have hired Becky Hammon as the first full-time female assistant coach in the league's history.
A native of Rapid City, South Dakota, Hammon is a 16 year WNBA veteran - last playing with the San Antonio Silver Stars and named one of the top 15 WNBA players of all time in 2011.

Hammon, who first played professional ball with the New York Liberty, says she is ready for the NBA. Hammon turned heads in 2008 when she became a naturalized Russian citizen so she could play for the Russian Olympic team that year. That was after not being selected to play for Team USA.
Hammon played high school basketball at Rapid CityStevensHigh School. As a junior, she was South Dakota Miss Basketball. As a senior, she was voted the South Dakota Player of the Year after averaging 26 points, 4 rebounds and 5 steals per game. Also that year, she was voted female class athlete by her graduating class.
Hammon played her college ball at ColoradoState.
