by Con Marshall
Led by junior Jackson Dickerson, several members of the Chadron High School track and field team did well Saturday at the Chadron State College High School Indoor Meet.
Dickerson won the long jump with a career-best leap of 20-feet, 5 inches. He also was second in the 55-meter dash and third in the 200 meters.
There were more than 100 entries in the 55 meters, nearly 50 in the long jump and more than 60 in the 200. Athletes from 15 schools competed.
Also placing high for the Cardinals was sophomore Kiya Passero, who was second in the 1600 meters.
Other Chadron athletes who finished among the top eight in their events included Denea Ray, fifth in the shot put; Maaryn Davis and Kianna Wright, who tied for fourth in the long jump; and Tanner Kickland, who was fourth in the shot put.
The boys’ 55-meter dash was won by Brady Turek of Hemingford, which entered the meet for the first time in a couple of decades. The Bobcats’ 4x160-meter relay team also placed third behind Rapid City Central, which set a meet record, and Gering.
Four meet records were set, all of them by boys. Another was by Gering in the 4x400 relay. A member of Gering’s team, Ryan Schwartzkopf, set a record of 23.2 seconds in the 200 while the fourth was set by Lucas Rosenbaum of Sidney, who went 14 feet, 2 inches in the pole vault. The old vault record was 14-0.
