(Neb.)-Chadron Basketball Teams Sweep Sidney On Senior Night

By: Andrew Lacy Posted at: 02/14/2014 10:12 PM
The Chadron boys basketball team celebrated senior night with yet another wild finish Friday, beating Sidney 48-46 on a last second basket by Keenan Johnson. The Cardinal girls won their game 56-31.

The boys game was evenly played the whole night with neither team getting up by more than seven. Sidney led most of the first half and was up 36-34 at the end of the third quarter. The teams continued to battle back and forth with Chadron going up by three with less than a minute remaining on a pair of Vonsinh Sayaloune free throws.

Paxton Ehler answered with a three pointer to tie the game at 46 with 23 seconds on the clock. Chadron held the ball for the final shot and Jackson Dickerson drove to the basket for a shot as time ran down. Dickerson missed, but Johnson followed for a tip in to put the Cardinals up and the Chadron students stormed the court thinking their team had won.

Officials ruled Sidney called timeout with two seconds still on the clock and the Raiders had one last chance, but a full court pass went over the head of Logan Lewis to give Chadron the ball back. The Cardinals got the ball in to TD Stein and held on for the victory.

Spencer Eliason led Chadron on his birthday with 19 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out of the game. Sayaloune added 11 points.

The girls game was much less competitive, as Chadron led nearly the whole night. Sidney struck first with a three pointer at 6:50 of the first quarter, but didn't lead again the rest of the game. The Lady Raiders didn't make another basket from the floor until nearly 12 minutes later at 2:26 of the second quarter. Chadron was up 33-16 at halftime and opened the third period with an 11-2 run to eliminate any thoughts of a Sidney comeback.

The Lady Cardinals committed just nine turnovers in the game and outrebounded Sidney 30-16 to get the win. Ashlea Kerr finished with 17 points and Peyton Hinn added 13.

Both teams will have one last road trip before subdistricts when they visit Sturgis on Saturday.
