(Las Vegas, NV)- Two Yellow Jacket softball players earned All-Tournament honors following their 5-game tournament at the 2014 Desert Stinger last weekend, which was hosted by Montana State University Billings.
A total of 32 NCAA Div. II teams (in the largest tournament hosted by one school) competed in the three-day tournament on eight fields where 80 total games were played.
Junior outfielder, Nia Shumpert (Greeley, Colo.) earned First Team All-Tournament honors following her breakout performance from the plate where she finished with a team-high .583 batting average after going 7-of-12 with two RBIs, one triple, two stolen bases, and totaled nine bases and scored six runs on the weekend.
Shumpert had a .750 slugging percentage with her best game coming in a 14-12 loss to Notre Dame de Namur (Calif.) where she went 2-of-4 with the triple and two stolen bases and three runs scored in the game.
Fellow junior outfielder from Colorado Springs, Colo., Cassie Smith, earned Honorable Mention honors after going 8-of-17 batting for an average of .471 including three RBIs, three doubles, two walks, and two stolen bases on way to totaling 11 bases as she scored six runs overall. Smith also had a .647 slugging and .526 on-base percentages.
The Yellow Jackets next games will come on the weekend of Feb. 22-23, as they open up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play from Spearfish against CSU-Pueblo beginning at 12 p.m. that Saturday at the BHSU Softball Complex located across from the Young Center.
