(S.D.)- BHSU Edged By Western Oregon In Finale Of Desert Stinger

(Las Vegas, NV)- The 2014 Yellow Jacket softball team closed out their opening weekend of competition of the new season by losing to Western Oregon University by a score of 12-9.

With the loss, the Jackets now move to 0-5 overall after the weekend's games before starting conference play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference later this month as they host CSU-Pueblo on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014.

For the second game in a row the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead, after scoring six runs in the first two innings to just one by WOU.  In the third inning as they trailed 6-1, WOU stepped up offensively to score five runs in the inning to tie the game.

WOU followed their third inning performance with back-to-back three run innings to take a 12-7 lead heading into the last inning where the Jackets managed to score two runs before the rally ended in the top of the seventh.

Seven Yellow Jackets got hits in the game to total 13 overall. BHSU was led by catcher, Erica Everson, who finished 2-of-3 from the plate with one homerun and four RBIs.  Opposing catcher for WOU, Raina Reece, led the game with six RBIs after going 2-of-3 from the plate and also had one homerun to lead her team to victory.

Two other WOU players hit homeruns in the contest including Kelsie Gardner and Amanda Evola.  Yellow Jacket left fielder, Nia Shumpert, went a perfect 3-of-3 from the plate and scored two runs.  First basemen, Rebecca Green, went 2-of-3 and three RBIs.

WOU pitcher, Jourdan Williams, went all seven innings and gave up eight earned runs on 13 hits and two strikeouts.  BHSU used three pitchers on the day as the losing pitcher was Stefanie Witman, who went all of 0.2 innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits.  Kaitlin Farrar pitched three innings and gave up three earned runs with one strikeout and Brittney Geersen went 2.1 innings and surrendered five earned runs on five hits.

As a team at the 2014 edition of the Desert Sting, the Jackets scored 38 runs and batted .327 as a team with a .373 on-base percentage, .456 slugging percentage and two homeruns.

Shumpert led the way batting .582 (7-of-12 AB) with one triple and two RBIs to go with two stolen bases.  Geersen went 4-of-8 (.500 avg) as Smith batted an impressive .471 after going 8-of-17 from the plate including a team-high six runs scored, three doubles and three RBIs.
