The Chadron girls basketball team trailed for nearly the entire game Saturday before managing a 68-64 come from behind win over Red Cloud.
Chadron's shooting woes from Friday night continued in the first half on Saturday and the team went into the locker room trailing 34-29. Red Cloud hit eight three pointers in the game, while Chadron made just two. Chadron was able to stay in the game in part by shooting 24 of 33 at the free throw line compared to 14 of 22 for Red Cloud.
The Lady Crusaders continued to cause trouble for Chadron in the second half with pressure defense that forced numerous turnovers. Chadron took the lead briefly early in the third quarter before Red Cloud went back in front and pushed the margin to as much as 14.
In the fourth period, Chadron mounted a furious comeback led by Peyton Hinn, who scored 19 in the game to go over 1,000 in her high school career. A free throw by Hinn and a three pointer by Bailea Kerr put Chadron up by two in the closing seconds of the game. Red Cloud had an opportunity to tie, but freshman Jadyn McCartney came up with a steal and hit a pair of foul shots to seal the win for the Lady Cardinals.
Chadron finished with five players scoring in double figures. In addition to Hinn, Bailea Kerr had 14, Chandler Hageman 13, Ashlea Kerr 12, and McCartney 10.
Chadron will have three games in five days to close out the regular season with the girls and boys both traveling to Valentine on Tuesday.
