(Neb.)-Cardinals Come Up Short Against St. Thomas More
(Chadron)- The Chadron boys basketball team erased a double digit fourth quarter deficit, but couldn't quite grab the lead Friday night in a 46-41 loss at St. Thomas More. The girls team played close in the first half but got manhandled in the paint in the second to fall 51-32.
The boys game was evenly played for the first 16 minutes with St. Thomas More taking a 20-16 lead into the half. The Cavalier lead grew to 10 after a Spencer Eliason technical foul to end the third period. The margin ballooned to 15 in the fourth in part because of a technical on Keenan Johnson.
Chadron rallied late to cut the deficit to as little as three in the closing minutes, but ran out of time on its comeback attempt. Eliason led the team with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The girls game was unusually low scoring in the first half and St. Thomas More led by eight at halftime. In the second half, the Lady Cavaliers outrebounded Chadron by a wide margin and took a commanding 43-28 lead in the third quarter behind the scoring of Alexys Swedlund, who finished the game with 29 points.
Chandler Hageman was the only Lady Cardinal in double figures with 10 points. Ashlea and Bailea Kerr scored eight each.
The girls will return home Saturday night to host Red Cloud. The boys next action will be Tuesday at Valentine.
