(S.D.)- Yellowjackets Host CMU And WSCU This Weekend

(Spearfish, SD)- The Black Hills State University men and women's basketball teams welcome two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents from Colorado this weekend when they host Colorado Mesa University on Friday night and Western State Colorado University on Saturday night.


The weekend tips off with the Yellow Jacket women (10-9, 9-6 RMAC) taking on the nation's 2nd-ranked team in the Lady Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University on Friday, Feb. 7, at 5:30 p.m. 

CMU comes into the weekend with a perfect 19-0 record and 15-0 in conference play.

The Jackets are currently on a four-game losing streak, most recently having lost the last two road contests at Regis and at Metro State by just 11 points combined.

CMU is currently atop the rankings in many statistical categories including scoring defense, where they are holding their opponents to 55.8 points per game.  BHSU is currently averaging 70.1 points per game, and are led by leading scorer Chelsey Bieger with 14.8 points per game – good for 10th-overall in the RMAC.

The Lady Mavericks' Sharaya Selsor, is the top scorer in the conference as she averages 24 points per game.  Last weekend, Slesor earned RMAC Player of the Week honors after averaging 26.5 points with a high of 30 in a win over Colorado Mines.  Bielger, meanwhile, scored a season-high 40 points last weekend versus Regis after going 15-of-26 from the field, including seven 3-pointers.

BHSU is second in the conference in field goal percentage shooting 44.4-percent, while CMU is currently shooting 45.4-percent as a team.  Another strength for CMU is their rebounding, while leading the RMAC grabbing an average of 43.6 per game, while holding their opponents to 32.6 per game.  The Yellow Jackets are currently averaging almost 34 rebounds per game.

The Lady Mountaineers of WSCU (5-15, 5-10 RMAC) will present a different look to the Jackets on Saturday night as they have struggled recently while riding an 8-game losing streak with their last victory coming Jan. 3 over Colorado Mines.

WSCU is led by Jade McIntosh, who is fifth in the conference in scoring and averages 16.6 points per game to help her team to a 56.2 points per game average.  The Lady Mountaineer defense surrenders an average of 68.6 points per game.


The Black Hills State University men's basketball team (8-11, 6-9 RMAC) come into the weekend having gone 4-6 in their last 10 games as they fight for playoff position while sitting in 10th-place in the conference.

BHSU will look to improve to the eighth position needed to make the playoffs beginning with Colorado Mesa on Friday at 7:30 p.m.  CMU has gone 3-7 in their last 10 games and sit at 9-10 overall and 7-8 in the RMAC.

The Yellow Jackets are currently averaging 75.9 points per game, while is CMU gives up an RMAC 3rd-best, 76.9 points per game.  Offensively, the Mavericks score 74.7 points per game as BHSU's defense holds opponents to an average of 77.6 points per contest – good for fourth in the conference.

Senior, Tommy Earl, remains the leading scorer for the Yellow Jackets while averaging 16.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.  Sophomore, Myles Henry, is now averaging 12.6 points per game after starting 8-of-19 games this season.

The leading rebounder for BHSU is senior, Cameron Anderson, who is now averaging 7.7 points per game while grabbing 6.7 rebounds per game.  Point guard, Brady Bisgaard, is the team's leading assist getter with 2.5 assists per game as he scores an average of 8.1 points per game.  Bisgaard also leads the team with a 1.6 assist-to-turnover ratio.

On Saturday night, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m., the WSCU Mountaineers will visit the Young Center as they look to improve their record of 2-17 overall and 2-13 in the RMAC.

The Mountaineers have gone 2-3 in their last five games with their last win coming last weekend over Colorado Christian, 76-71.  WSCU's leading scorer is Jordan Adams at 17.1 points per game.

WSCU is last in the RMAC shooting an average of 41.9-percent as a team per game, as their defense gives up a shooting average of 48.5 percent to opponents.  WSCU averages 31.1 rebounds per game.
