(Neb.)-Chadron State Upends Newman To Open Season
KEARNEY, Nebraska – The Chadron State College volleyball team got its 2013 campaign off to a strong start by earning a five set (25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 21-25, 15-13) victory over Newman University Friday at the New Victorian Inn & Suites/Runza Classic hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
The Eagles fell to nationally-ranked Nebraska-Kearney in three sets (25-9, 25-6, 25-8) in the night's final match.
Chadron State will play South Dakota School of Mines and William Jewell College Saturday.
In the season opener against Newman, four CSC attackers had at least 10 kills and the Eagles hit .111 as a team. Erika Roybal led the way with 14 kills, Jessica Jester had 11 and Barbie DeCent and Hanna Flaming finished with 10 apiece. DeCent and libero Brittany Oddo also led the Eagles with 21 digs.
The Eagles also received solid play from their setter. Justine Ackie had a match-high 48 set assists, served five aces and added 14 digs.
Also for CSC, Alia Brennan finished with seven total blocks and had eight kills and Alyssa Bauer had 11 digs.
The Eagles had a tough time getting their offense going against the Lopers. UNK limited Chadron State to just 15 kills for the match and a negative hitting percentage.
Defensively, Oddo again led the Eagles with 15 digs.
Nine UNK players recorded an attack and the Lopers hit over .400 for the match.
