(Neb.)-Nebraska to unveil Devaney statue
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska officials say a new statue of legendary football coach Bob Devaney will grace the latest addition to Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.
Athletics director Shawn Eichorst announced Thursday that the statue will be unveiled at a brief ceremony Friday afternoon in the new East Stadium Plaza. Members of Devaney's family, former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne and university Chancellor Harvey Perlman are expected to attend the event.
The life-size bronze rendering was sculpted by Omaha artist Joe Putjenter.
Nebraska had but three winning teams in the 21 seasons before Devaney arrived in 1962. Under his leadership, the Huskers won back-to-back national championships in 1970 and 1971.
Devaney served as Nebraska's athletics director from 1967 to 1993. He died May 9, 1997, at age 82.
