(Neb.)-Chadron picks up a pair of wins in Hot Springs

By: Andrew Lacy Posted at: 12/10/2012 11:01 PM
The Chadron girls basketball team came out firing Monday night to improve their record to 6-0 by blowing past Hot Springs, 74-23.

Chadron's defensive pressure suffocated the Lady Bison, as the Cardinals built a 29-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. That was more than enough for Chadron, as they continued to build their lead throughout the night.

Briley Hannaford had her best offensive game of the season so far, leading the Lady Cardinals with 14 points while continuing to play stellar defense.

Chadron spread the wealth in its typical unselfish fashion, with four players scoring in double figures and 10 of 12 getting at least one basket.

The Chadron boys had a solid defensive effort of their own, beating the Bison 49-39 to get their record up to 3-3.

The Cardinals gave up just four points in the first quarter and five in the second to head to the locker room with a 27-9 lead. Hot Springs shot itself back into the game thanks to a pair of three pointers each from Chad Janis, Austin Benford and Grady Egly, but were never able to cut the deficit to less than eight.

Bo Westlake and Spencer Eliason were monsters in the paint for Chadron as Westlake finished the game with 14 points and 18 rebounds, while Eliason had 15 points and 14 boards.

The Cardinals return to the Birdcage this weekend to host Scottsbluff on Friday and Gering on Saturday.
