(Neb.)-Cardinals split basketball games at Torrington

By: Andrew Lacy Posted at: 12/09/2012 12:12 AM
The Chadron girls basketball team stayed unbeaten Saturday night with a 73-43 win at Torrington.

The game was a rematch from one week ago when Chadron won 80-26 in the Western Conference Invite. The second time around, Torrington handled Chadron's defensive pressure much better and avoided giving up too many easy baskets to only trail by 8 after the first quarter, 18-10.

That was as close as Torrington would get, though, as the Lady Cardinals picked up their play on both sides of the ball, pushing the lead to as much as 35 on their way to the win.

Chadron was led by another solid performance from Ashlea Kerr, who finished with 17 points and 9 rebounds, as well as 15 points from Peyton Hinn. The girls have now won five straight.

The Chadron boys struggled early in a very physical game, falling behind 12-0 in the first quarter on their way to a 56-51 defeat. The deficit grew to 16 at halftime, when Torrington led 35-19.

The Cardinals were plagued by foul trouble as three of their five starters had three fouls by the break. Torrington took advantage, making 15 of 17 free throws in the first half.

Chadron played much better in the second half as Spencer Eliason took over, scoring 22 of his 26 points after intermission while pulling down 9 rebounds.

Chadron cut the margin to three at the end of the third quarter and Eliason gave the team its first lead of the game, 51-49, with 3:56 remaining. Torrington took back the lead with 1:54 left on the clock and held on for the win.

The Blazers were led by hot shooting from Cam Kelly, who finished with 15 points, while Blake Wisroth added 14.

Both Chadron teams will have another road game Monday as they visit Hot Springs.
