(Neb.)-Chadron girls, boys both win home opener

By: Andrew Lacy Posted at: 12/07/2012 09:38 PM
There was plenty to cheer about at the Birdcage Friday night at both the Chadron girls and boys teams took down Gordon-Rushville in their home opener.

The Chadron girls ran their win streak to four with a 65-31 blowout that was never in doubt.

The Lady Cardinals led by 11 after the first quarter, and saw their lead balloon to 36 by the end of the third when they led 54-18.

Chadron moved the ball well with Peyton Hinn and Maggie Earney finding plenty of open shooters while running the point. Four Cardinals finished the game with double figure scoring, led by 13 from Ashlea Kerr, and four players had at least five rebounds.

The boys followed with a solid defensive display and nearly pitched a shutout in the first quarter en route to a 55-35 win. The Mustangs did not score their first basket until there was just 1:22 remaining in the first period.

Spencer Eliason had a strong first half with 12 points and 7 rebounds at intermission pushing Chadron to and 11 point halftime lead. The lead was cut in half by some hot shooting as Gordon-Rushville knocked down three straight three pointers to open the third quarter. The Cards regrouped and pushed their lead to 14 by the end of the quarter and never looked back.

Eliason finished with 14 and 12 boards while Cy Rahill chipped in 14 points to lead Chadron.

Sophomore Vonsinh Sayaloune was solid after being pushed into the starting role by an injury to Matt Lordino, finishing with 8 points and a number of flashy passes and quick steals. Lordino is expected to miss 8-10 weeks with a fractured pelvis and could possibly be back by the end of the season.

Both teams will be on the road Saturday for a trip to Torrington. The girls dominated the Blazers last week at Western Conference, 80-26. The boys lost last week, 49-42.
