(Neb.) - Chadron State barrel racer leads college finals rodeo

Chadron State College freshman Amy Deichert (pronounced Die-kirt) of Spearfish has the lead at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper among the 11 barrel racers who have completed their three runs prior to the finals.

            Deichert and her chestnut gelding, Frenchie, had a time of 14.07 seconds Tuesday night, giving them a total time of 42.68 seconds on their three performances.

            That’s 57 hundredths of a second faster than the next best time after three runs.

            Deichert’s time Tuesday night was the second best of the performance, just five one-hundredths of a second slower than the 14.02-second run by Rachael Primm of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

            However, Deichert’s total time is nearly a second faster than Primm’s.

            Deichert tied for fifth and sixth in the first go-round in 14.34 seconds and tied for 10^th in the second go-round in 14.27 seconds.

            She will now play the waiting game, because there are three more performances before the finals on Saturday night. The cowgirls with the 12 fastest times after all three go-rounds have been completed will be in the finals.

            There are 47 barrel racers at the rodeo.

            CSC rodeo coach Dustin Luper, who recruited Deichert, said he’s certain she’ll reach the finals because she was fifth in the averages after two go-rounds were complete. Then she had her fastest time Tuesday night.

            Deichert said she bought Frenchie last October from a neighbor at Spearfish and used him during the spring rodeos.

            “I got him pretty cheap and we’re doing pretty well so far,” Deichert said. “We’ll have to wait to see what happens the next few days.”

            Luper said none of the other four CSC contestants will reach Saturday’s finals, but a couple of  them have another chance to place in go-rounds.
