(Neb.)-CSC Cowboy Wins Bareback Riding

By: Nick Jakusz Posted at: 04/20/2009 10:58 AM
Chadron State College freshman Whitten Hoover of Ainsworth continued to ride high in bareback riding in the Central Rocky Mountain Region by winning that event this past weekend at the Casper College rodeo.

Hoover was first in the first go-round with 74 points and placed fourth in the championship go-round with 72 points to give him a total of 146 points and the overall title. It was the sixth consecutive rodeo in the region in which Hoover has placed among the top five in bareback riding, but this was the first time he has won the event.

Hoover also was sixth in bullriding. He was sixth in the opening go-round with 55 points. Although he was bucked off in the second go-round, so were all the other bullriders in that session, leaving him in sixth place in the averages.

Also placing in the averages for Chadron State was senior Lisa Vroman of Buffalo, S.D. She was fifth in both the go-rounds of breakaway roping and also finished fifth in the final standings. Her times were 3.3 and 12.5 seconds.

Another cowgirl from Harding County, S.D., Josi Jenson of Ralph, was second in the first go-round of goat tying in 8.3 seconds, but the goat struggled during her second run and her time of 14.0 seconds knocked her out of the averages.

CSC’s Del Kraupie of Bridgeport was sixth in the first go-round of steer wrestling at Casper in 5.5 seconds, but he took a no time on his second run.

There are two rodeos remaining in the region this spring. The first will be the weekend at Northeastern Junior College at Sterling, Colo., and the second will be at the University of Wyoming on May 1-3.
