(Neb)-Walmart Marks 20 Years In Chadron Listen
CHADRON - The Chadron Walmart marked its 20th birthday Friday with a low-key celebration that included a cake and small gifts for customers.
The store's current 300-plus employees - associates in Walmart parlance - include 13 who were there January 26, 1998, when the store opened its doors for the first time and served over 4,000 customers that day.
One of the 13 is Dawn Wordekamper, now an assistant manager. The arrival of Walmart was controversial with one information meeting filling the Chadron State College Student Center Ballroom and Scottsbluff Room, raising questions about its long-term future in the community.
Wordekamper says there was never any doubt among the associates that Walmart was here to stay.
Wordekamper had already been with Walmart for 6 years when she came to Chadron and admits she never dreamed at the time that it was the town where she'd settle down and raise a family.
Missing from the celebration because of a scheduling conflicting was Adam Gardner, store manager the past decade.
He told the Chadron Record earlier that the relationship between the Chadron area, its people, Walmart, and his employees is wonderful and rare...something he and Walmart are committed to preserving.
