(Neb)-Walmart In Chadron Is Turning 20
CHADRON - Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of the opening of Walmart in Chadron. The store is celebrating with a party that includes an anniversary cake starting at 10:00. Special honorees will be 13 Walmart associates who were there opening day when more than 4,000 customers were served.
The Chadron Walmart was one of the first of what the retail giant called mini-superstores, 2/3rds to half the size of the standard superstore but with the same items - only fewer of them.
Store Manager Adam Gardner wasn't one of the original Chadron hires, but has spent most of his 17-years with the company in Chadron, the last decade as manager. He told the Chadron Record that the store has a family atmosphere among employees and customers he thinks is "rare in this day and age."
Walmart is the largest private employer in Chadron and Gardner calls the community an ideal environment for it with the college and surrounding rural communities providing workers with a good work ethic - top talent that provides the high level of service customers deserve."
Controversy surrounded the coming of Walmart - the Chadron Chamber of Commerce supported Walmart and saw many of its downtown merchant members drop their membership - but the store is now seen as a key part of the local economy, bringing in customers who then shop at other Chadron stores and restaurants.
