(SD)-OST Looking For New Police Chief Again
PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) - The Oglala Sioux Tribe is once again looking for a police chief because the newly-hired chief apparently changed her mind.
Grace Her Many Horses, a police captain on the Fort Berthold reservation in North Dakota and former police chief on the Rosebud reservation, was hired this summer and was scheduled to begin on the Pine Ridge Reservation last week, but the tribe posted the position again on its Facebook page last Wednesday. The application deadline is next Wednesday.
Oglala Sioux tribal Law and Order Committee vice-chairwoman Lydia Bear Killer says the tribe decided to hire Her Many Horses, a member of the Oglala SIoux Tribe, because of her experience in turning around the struggling Rosebud department.
Bear Killer says Oglala Sioux officials were aware Her Many Horses had once been removed as Rosebud chief, but believed it was a political move rather than a result of wrongdoing...adding that Her Many Horses went through the established job application procedure including a phone interview and background check.
Mark Mesteth remains acting Pine Ridge chief, a position he's held since Harry Martinez resigned in April following a vote of no confidence from the tribal council. A tribal department memo says there have been at least 7 different police chiefs over the last 9 years.
