Tourists stopping in the western Wyoming community of Kemmerer are amazed to learn that James Cash Penney started the retail giant there in the early 1900s.

One of his original store buildings still occupies the corner of Main Street and JC Penney Drive.

Penney is among a handful of businessmen and women being honored in the inaugural class of the newly created Wyoming Business Hall of Fame.

His contribution to business extends beyond Wyoming, where his business started as one of a chain of Golden Rule stores in 1902.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports that local legend has it that Penney came to town on a one-way ticket at the age of 26 and started his store, which grew into household name around America.
