(Neb.)-County To Receive Gift Of A Tree

By: Chris Fankhauser Posted at: 11/06/2013 12:45 PM

(Chadron)-The Dawes County Courthouse will be receiving a gift from a local church in the form of a tree. Judy Rama with the Chadron First Congregational Church approached the County Commissioners at their Wednesday meeting with the offer after a group from the church decided they wanted to do something to give back to the community.

Rama said the group will be planting several trees, and wanted to make one of the recipients the County. Rama approached the Board as a representative of the group, and will take information back so they can start making plans as long as the Commissioners were on board with the idea.

Commissioner Jake Stewart said the County had already planted 10 trees, but there are more to be planted, and they already have the lawn plotted out where other trees will go, which would fall in line with the donation. Rama suggested the Commissioners help pick the type of tree to be planted, but Stewart said he thought it would be nice for the group to not only pick the tree, but where it would be planted.

All of the Commissioners were in agreement with the tree planting, but were a bit concerned as to the time frame. Rama said they had hoped to have the tree planted by the end of November, as she believed the voucher for the tree needed to be used by then, and the weather might not be favorable after that time. The Board asked if it was possible to wait until next spring as they didn’t want a hard freeze to damage the tree, and the Board is also looking into putting an underground sprinkler system in the main lawn area of the Courthouse, and it would be easier to plant after that was planned out. Rama said she would see if the voucher could be used in the spring instead.
