(S.D.)-Security Upgrades In Rapid City Council Chambers Pondered

By: Roxie Graham-Marski Posted at: 10/31/2013 08:51 AM
RAPID CITY, S.D. (ASSOCIATED PRESS) - Email threats from what authorities call an "irate citizen" have prompted Rapid City's police department to recommend $26,000 worth of security updates for the City Council chambers.

     The
city's Legal and Finance Committee supports the request from Assistant Police Chief Karl Jegeris, and the City Council will consider it Monday.

Council member Steve Laurenti says he wants assurances that simpler, cheaper alternatives have been considered. Council member Bonny Petersen shares Laurenti's concerns but says updating the chambers would help protect not only the council but also city employees and people who attend council meetings.

Jegeris says security in the building is "20 years behind the curve."
