(Chadron)-The husband-wife team of Chris and Julie Garrett of Chadron won its seventh championship in the Fur Trade Days Regatta, the annual two-person canoe race at ChadronState Park on Sunday.
The Garretts retained the trophy for the annual canoe race by defeating Justin and Sawyer Haag, father and son of Chadron, in the finals. The Garretts posted a 25-second victory in the final heat with a time of 2:38.
Eight teams participated in the Regatta’s canoe races. The race challenges participants to carry canoes down the bank of the park’s lagoon, mount their vessels and navigate their way around the pond while fending off another team. Mounting the canoes without capsizing is always an entertaining challenge.
The event is organized and sponsored by the Chadron Kiwanis club. It also featured paddleboat races for children. Each of the children received gift certificates from Taco John’s and McDonald’s.
ChadronState Park provided free watermelon for the contestants and attendees.
