By: Chris Fankhauser Posted at: 05/23/2013 07:01 AM

WHITEWOOD, S.D. (AP) - The western South Dakota town of Whitewood has named a 20-year law-enforcement veteran as its new police chief.

Mayor Deb Schmidt announced at a Monday City Council meeting that Robert Steenholdt will replace Randy Milburn, who submitted a letter of resignation last week after 13 months on the job.

Steenholdt lived in Spearfish for 12 years and the Lake Madison area for eight years.

The 59-year-old Steenholdt tells the paper that he'd missed the Black Hills and wanted to return. He's lived in Whitewood since July.
