(S.D.)-U.S. Senator Tim Johnson Steps Into Confederate Flag Dispute
HOT SPRINGS, S.D. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson says he thinks Confederate flags should be removed from a Veterans Affairs hospital in the South Dakota city of Hot Springs.
The flags are in an eight-flag historical display. They were removed for a few days when some veterans getting treatment at the hospital complained, but they were put back on display this week. Johnson says that he's disappointed.
VA Black Hills Health System Director Steve DiStasio says the flags were put back on display because of their historical significance. Some veterans say they agree with the move. Others say the flags symbolize racism.
