(Neb.)- Nebraska Lawmakers Advance Climate Change Study

By: Jeremy Anderson Posted at: 04/23/2013 04:40 PM
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska lawmakers gave first round approval to a measure that would launch a state review of climate change.

Lawmakers voted 35-0 to advance the proposal by Sen. Ken Haar of Malcolm.

The bill would require the state's climate-assessment commission to study and report on how climate change is impacting the state.

Nebraska lawmakers who do not believe in global warming blocked a portion of the bill that would have let a climatologist join the state climate committee that assesses drought, severe weather and climate change. State senators also approved an amendment to call climate change cyclical throughout the bill.

The measure advanced after a handful of lawmakers denounced global warming. About 97 percent of scientists agree human activities contribute to climate change.
