(S.D.)-Tribe Hauls House To D.C. To Show Housing Problem
KYLE, S.D. (AP) - The Oglala Sioux Tribe is hauling an old home to the nation's capital to demonstrate housing problems faced by the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwester South Dakota.
The two-bedroom home built in the 1960s left the reservation Saturday.
Paul Iron Cloud, chief executive officer of the tribe's housing authority, says the display is intended to show Congress the kind of substandard housing people live in on the reservation.
Iron Cloud says the reservation needs 4,000 homes, but has only 1,100. He says the tribe currently has enough money to build only 10 houses a year
Iron Cloud says the tribal Housing Authority's budget was $11.5 million last year, but federal budget cuts have brought that down to $10 million this year.
