GILLETTE, Wyoming (AP) - Snowstorms like the one this past week can cause problems for newborn calves across Wyoming.
Ranchers have been checking on calves to make sure they didn't die in the storm. There have been reports of some calves perishing.
Glenn Clabaugh, who ranches south of Gillette, says he lost one calf because of the storm. He has 450 cows that are calving.
The cows can get some natural protection in the field hiding behind the trees or flocking to each other. But it's not the snow that puts the calves at risk, it's the wind and cold.
Clabaugh tells the Gillette News Record (http://bit.ly/Z9w1Wx) that is there's little wind then calves have a good chance of surviving.
Ranchers are thankful for the moisture though, especially because of the drought conditions.
