(S.D.)-Panel Seeking Suggestions For Offensive Names

By: Dennis and Kathi Brown Posted at: 04/13/2013 10:22 AM

PIERRE, South Dakota (AP) - The South Dakota Board on Geographic Names is asking for input to come up with new names for some Black Hills sites that contain the word "negro."

The names are considered offensive, and guidelines established by the U.S. Board of Geographic Names require that a new name be solicited.

The sites are near Wind Cave in Custer County, near Tinton in Lawrence County and near Medicine Mountain in Pennington County.

Name suggestions may be descriptions of topography, local history or associated with natural life. A name can't duplicate another name in the state or nearby in an adjoining state. People have until June 1 to submit suggestions.

Suggestions can be sent to the South Dakota Board of Geographic Names; Department of Tribal Relations; 711 Wells Ave.; Pierre, S.D. 57501.
