By: Chris Fankhauser Posted at: 03/26/2013 09:02 AM

CUSTER, S.D. (AP) - An eighth-grade student from Custer is South Dakota's spelling champ.

Max Oesterling correctly spelled "pronouncement" to win the oral competition of the University of South Dakota Scripps Spelling Bee over the weekend.

Oesterling took part in the spelling bee as a representative of the South Dakota Christian Home School Association. He will represent South Dakota in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in late May.
